Recognizing Pain in Dogs – Typical Signs

It’s not always easy to recognize pain in dogs. That’s because they’ve learned to suppress pain (some better than others). Why is that? It’s deeply rooted in nature: showing weakness is dangerous. But what’s essential for survival in the wild makes it hard for us as owners to intervene in time when something’s wrong. And so, the occasional ache or pain goes unnoticed at first. Oh, if only our dogs could talk sometimes—that would be it, wouldn’t it?

This wish won’t come true. But you can still learn to better recognize the signs, which can sometimes be subtle. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what the signs of pain in dogs are, how you can assess what might be causing your pet pain, and what you can do yourself if your dog is in pain.

Pain in Dogs – How Does a Dog Behave When It’s in Pain?

Pain manifests differently in every animal. The signs aren’t just physical; they often first appear as subtle changes in behavior. Some dogs withdraw, seem less lively, or become noticeably restless and have trouble settling down. Another warning sign is a loss of appetite. This is a clear warning sign, especially in dogs that never usually skip a meal.

A dog’s mood can also change: a dog in pain may react irritably or suddenly exhibit unusual behavior, such as avoiding being touched. Nervousness or obvious defensive reactions may also occur.

Physically, typical signs include:

  • A hunched or tense posture
  • Lameness or an altered gait
  • Licking, nibbling, or gnawing on a specific spot
  • Whimpering or crying

These are just a few examples. However, there are many other signs—many of which are easy to overlook. That’s exactly why it’s important to keep a close eye on your dog and take even small changes seriously.

How can I tell what's bothering my dog?

Depending on how your dog behaves, you can also draw conclusions about the source of the pain. Lameness, for example, is a fairly obvious sign that something is hurting in the musculoskeletal system. Perhaps your dog has joint problems, for instance. Constant licking of a specific part of the body also suggests that there is a problem there—whether it’s an injury, inflammation, or a foreign object.

But it’s not always that simple. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, the cause remains unclear. Your dog shows “some kind of problem,” but nothing seems to fit together quite right. That’s exactly when you should patiently look for clues, observe changes in your dog’s daily routine, and, if you’re still unsure, seek professional advice.

What can I do if my dog is in pain?

When in doubt, always take your pet to the vet! Otherwise, you risk the pain getting worse or a condition that could otherwise be easily treated becoming chronic.

However, there are also cases where you can take matters into your own hands—whether to offer support or because you know the cause is harmless and can easily be treated on your own.

So what can you do on your own?

  • Gentle massages to relieve muscle tension
  • Physical therapy exercises that promote strength, stability, and flexibility
  • Movement
  • Naturopathy
