From time to time, dog owners report that CBD had no effect on their dogs. When asked how long they gave their dogs CBD, the answer is often “a few days” or “just a few treats here and there”—and that’s exactly where the problem lies. For most dogs, such a short period of use isn’t long enough to produce a positive effect. Most of the time , there are simple reasons why the CBD treatment did not produce the desired results.

How long does it take for the CBD to take effect in my dog?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Every dog reacts differently to CBD and responds to it at different rates. CBD is a neurotransmitter. It regulates and balances the body by correcting miscommunication between the body and the brain, which is usually caused by stress, poor posture (animal welfare), or other factors.
It is important to note that CBD should ideally be taken over an extended period of time before drawing any conclusions. How long this period should be depends on the reason for taking it. This is because there are different forms of administration: long-term use, a course of treatment, or occasional use.

CBD for more serious and long-term issues: Long-term use
For more serious mental health issues or chronic physical ailments, we recommend long-term treatment, which means that CBD is administered on an ongoing basis.
- Start by establishing a baseline CBD level using approximately 0.5 mg of CBD per kilogram of your dog’s body weight each day. The daily dose should ideally be spread out over the course of the day—for example, in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. By the way, it doesn’t matter whether you use the CBD treats, the CBD oil, or both products.
- After about 3 days, you can slowly increase the dose a little bit each day. The goal here isn’t to reach the highest possible dose, but to find the level at which your dog feels best. Most dogs require between 0.5 and 1 mg of CBD per kilogram of body weight per day. You can use this as a guideline, but since every dog is a little different, your dog may need more or less CBD. Just try out what works best for your dog and don’t worry—you really can’t go wrong here! CBD has no serious side effects.
- Take a break of 4 to 5 days every 3 months to prevent your dog’s endocannabinoid system from becoming sluggish. After the break, you can resume administration as usual.
How quickly does CBD work for more serious and long-term issues?
Some clients report seeing initial improvements after just a few days, even with more deeply rooted psychological issues.
Other customers report noticing a real improvement after 4 to 6 weeks. Every dog is unique, so each one reacts a little differently. We therefore recommend trying CBD for at least 4 weeks.
CBD for Acute Conditions: Short-Term Treatment
For acute issues, CBD can be administered as a short-term treatment—for example, to help manage inflammation or to specifically address a mental health issue. The approach is the same as described above, with the sole difference being that administration is stopped as soon as the problem resolves.
One example of this is fear of New Year’s Eve. For dogs that have trouble with this, we recommend starting treatment at least 4 weeks in advance. On New Year’s Eve itself, the dose can be increased to three or four times the usual amount (more on this in the next section).

CBD for exceptional situations of stress or strain: as-needed use
In cases of extreme stress or physical strain—such as a fear of thunderstorms—CBD can also be used on an as-needed basis. For this type of use, the dosage can be increased to three or four times the daily dose.
If it’s a predictable event like New Year’s Eve and you’re already taking CBD, then taking an extra dose at that time is even more effective. Once your baseline CBD level is established, “more really does help more.”
How quickly does CBD work for acute problems?
In cases of acute issues, such as nervousness or anxiety, CBD can interact with the body within a few seconds or a few minutes. How quickly this happens also depends on whether it is taken via
- the mucous membranes (drops in the lips) or
- the digestive tract
is recorded.
Our nacani CBD oil can be applied directly to the lips, where it is absorbed directly through the mucous membranes. This is the fastest way for it to take effect in acute cases.

The speed at which CBD takes effect in dogs varies
How quickly CBD takes effect depends on various factors, particularly whether a baseline CBD level has already been established. Because every dog is a little different and the reasons for administering CBD vary, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. In any case, we recommend a trial period of at least 4 weeks. The dosage should be adjusted according to the dog’s weight. If there is a positive effect, CBD can be given daily. Taking a break of 4 to 5 days every 3 months ensures that the body’s own endocannabinoid system does not become sluggish.
