Some dog owners are hesitant to try CBD products for their dogs—simply because they’re afraid of side effects. We all want only the best for our furry friends. So it’s completely understandable to feel a bit unsure at first when it comes to new, unfamiliar products. We’re also often asked whether CBD is addictive or gets you high (no, of course not!). But of course, it’s a shame if some dogs miss out on the positive effects of CBD simply because their owners have concerns or preconceptions, or simply don’t know enough about the topic. Can CBD cause side effects?
The short answer: In general, even natural products can have side effects. However, in the case of CBD, these are not dangerous for healthy dogs—and in most cases, therefore, there is no reason to avoid giving it and miss out on the many benefits CBD offers.
What side effects can CBD cause in dogs?
The following symptoms have been observed in dogs following an overdose of CBD:
- Loss of appetite
- Dry mouth
- Low blood pressure
- Drowsiness and mild dizziness
- Diarrhea
Can CBD make my dog “high”?
CBD does not get your dog high. It is derived from the legal industrial hemp variety (Cannabis sativa). Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds produced by the body. CBD has a positive effect on cellular metabolism and can either stimulate or suppress cellular activity.

How can you minimize the risk of side effects in dogs caused by CBD?
Make sure to use the correct dosage
Especially when trying CBD for the first time, it’s important to stick to the correct dosage. How much CBD your dog should receive depends primarily on its weight. We recommend 0.5 to 1 mg of CBD per kilogram of body weight. If you’re unsure, you can also use our dosage calculator.
If you do happen to give your dog a bit too much CBD, there’s no need to worry. For example, a dear customer’s pug once got its paws on an entire pack of nacanis—and aside from being a little sleepy afterward, he was just fine 🙂
Choose high-quality products
In addition to the correct dosage, the quality of CBD products is, of course, also crucial for optimal tolerability. Above all, a good CBD oil should meet the following criteria:
- Full-spectrum oil with a natural balance of active ingredients
- Direct pressing using all parts of the plant
- High-quality raw materials
- Regular, independent laboratory analyses
Does CBD interact with other medications?
If your dog is taking other medications, CBD’s properties may, in some cases, enhance or reduce the effects of those medications. CBD can affect liver enzymes. As a result, some medications may be broken down more slowly.
Which medications can interact with CBD?
Most studies on this topic have been conducted in humans. It is currently believed that interactions occur with the following classes of medications:
- Antiepileptic drugs
- Antidepressants
- Anesthetics
- Beta blockers

- Antipsychotics
- Benzodiazepines
- Statins

- Steroids
- NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen)
- antibiotic
CBD and Medications – What Is the Recommended Course of Action?
In most cases, it is sufficient to wait one to two hours between taking medication and taking CBD. However, there are also medications that should not be combined with CBD at all.
To avoid unintended side effects, you should consult a veterinarian before giving your pet CBD if they are also taking other medications.
CBD for Dogs with Pre-existing Conditions
Can CBD be given to dogs with liver damage?
Like most medications, CBD is metabolized by the liver. Dogs with liver damage or elevated liver enzymes should only begin taking CBD after consulting with a veterinarian, and their liver function should be monitored regularly while they are taking it. It is not possible to generally advise against using CBD for liver problems; it always depends on the individual case.
Can CBD be given to dogs with an MR1 defect?
Dogs with the MR1 defect can also benefit from CBD. Please start with a very low dose and increase it gradually, as the CBD may have a stronger effect than in other dogs due to the permeable blood-brain barrier.
CBD does not cause any serious side effects in dogs
As you can see, there’s no need to worry about giving your dog CBD products. Even an overdose isn’t dangerous for healthy dogs. So there’s no reason not to try CBD for your dog.
